WINSTON - THE SINGING FARMER

'Have yer got an idea for diversifyin' boy?:" Norfolk farmer Winston Harrold sure has. As The Singing Farmer, he has delighted audiences around the country with his good natured, humorous songs with a touch of nostalgia which evoke the country, its characters and 'rummin ol ways'- Any resemblance to Allan Smethurst, The Singing Postman who became famous with 'Hev Yew Got A Loight Boy,' is quite Intentional. Winston admires him just as the 'Postman' admired in his turn the father of American country music, Jimmie Rodgers, the Singing Brakeman. His musical career began in the cow shed when he was ten years old and the cowmen taught him to play the mouth organ. They had to keep a look out for their boss - Winston's father - who disapproved of such leanings in the son he was adamant would follow in his footsteps and become a farmer, and many farmers will recognise having had such a conflict themselves. It was not until several decades later that Winston began performing in public as a hobby and his career blossomed when he started winning talent competitions: The Bygone Village 'Great British Street Entertainers Championship' 1991 and the Sheringham Carnival, 'Busker of the Year 1991',competition. Today Winston is ploughing the pastures of a new career doing what he enjoys, that is, making audiences happy, and its his wife Jayne who is running things down on the farm. |
